Figure 2

Dose-dependent immunization of rats with P28GST compared with a reference treatment with 5-amino-salicylic acid (5-ASA). Rats were either immunized with two injections of P28GST at three concentrations (50, 5, or 0.5 μg kg−1) in the presence of aluminum hydroxide as adjuvant, with adjuvant alone before 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) injection, or treated with 5-ASA (30 mM). (a) Clinical score (Wallace’s score) of rats with TNBS-induced colitis. (b) Histological score (Ameho’s score) of colon tissues assessed blindly by a pathologist to determine the degree of colitis using a score from 0 to 8. (c) Myeloperoxidase (MPO) was evaluated in the colon in the six groups of rats by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results are expressed as ng per mg of total proteins. Levels of (d) interleukin (IL)-1β, (e) tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and (f) IL-17 mRNA in the different groups of rats were assessed by quantitative PCR. Results are expressed as means±s.e.m.; n=10 rats per group. *P<0.05; **P<0.01; ***P<0.001.
