Colonization of conventionally raised mice with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) accelerates growth and development of intestinal microbiota before weaning. Mice were treated with live LGG from postnatal days 1 to day 5, and colonization was confirmed by detecting LGG in fecal bacteria, as described in Figure 1. Fixed LGG was used to treat mice as a non-colonization control. Bodyweight was recorded. Bodyweight at birth was set as 1 (a). *P<0.05 compared with the control group at the same age. Indicated intestinal tissues from 2-week-old mice were prepared for H&E staining (b), and the length of villus and the depth of crypt were measured in at least 50 villi and crypts/mouse (c).
