From: Fibroblast growth factor-2 drives and maintains progressive corneal neovascularization following HSV-1 infection

Figure 4

Gene and protein expression of pro-angiogenic factors are elevated in the cornea following virus clearance. Mice were infected with HSV-1 and corneas were collected at the indicated times post infection (pi) to for gene and protein expression analysis. Gene expression is categorized as (a) high relative expression, (b) medium relative expression, and (c) low relative expression in the corneas at times pi. (d) Heat map clustering/analysis of pro-angiogenic gene expression at times pi. (e) Protein levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), (f) angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), (g) fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2), (h) hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), (i) VEGF-A, and (j) matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in time-course experiments. Data represent summary of mean±s.e.m. of two–three independent experiments with n=5–9 mice per time point. *P<0.1, **P<0.01, ***P<0.001, ****P<0.0001 comparing infected mice to uninfected (UI) control animals as determined by one-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s multiple comparisons test.
