From: Hepatitis C-associated hepatocellular carcinomas in non-cirrhotic livers

The cases showed the typical histology of chronic hepatitis C, with mild-to-moderate portal inflammatory infiltrates (a, × 250 original magnification), composed predominantly of mature-appearing lymphocytes mixed with occasional plasma cells, eosinophils and Kupffer cells. Lymphoid aggregates eccentrically located in the portal tracts were common. Scattered foci of inflammatory infiltrates were present in the hepatic lobules, composed predominantly of lymphocytes and Kupffer cells (b, × 250). Masson trichrome stains showed periportal fibrosis (c, × 40) or bridging fibrosis (d, × 40). Hepatocellular carcinoma showed the classical histology with thickened trabecular (e, × 100) and/or pseudoglandular formation (f, × 100).
