A representative low-power (a; H&E, × 200) photograph showing expansile nests of malignant melanocytes at the dermal–epidermal junction with a gradual transition to smaller nests and cells in the dermis. At higher power (b; FISH, × 600), 6p chromosomal gains are observed at the dermal–epidermal junction and (c; FISH, × 600) nests from the superior aspect show 6p chromosomal gains, whereas deeper dermal nests show normal chromosomal copy numbers.
