Histologically tumor-free mucosa from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients is prone to the modulation of miRNAs expression. (a) Unsupervised clustering analysis representing the expression of the four prognostic miRNAs of normal tissue specimens from 21 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients cultured with conditioned medium from Cal27 cells or with control RPMI 10% fetal bovine serum medium (RPMI). (b) Box plot representing the expression of the two prognostic miRNAs (miR-21-3p and miR-429) significantly upregulated in normal tissue specimens from 21 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients, cultured with conditioned medium from Cal27 cells compared with the same tissues cultured in control RPMI medium (P=0.007 and P=0.029, respectively).
