(a) The residual mucosal abnormality in treated rectal cancers can be quite variable. In this specimen, a 4 cm relatively bland appearing ulcer is identified. Histologic sections from this area demonstrated residual tumor. (b) An obvious mass remains in this abdominoperineal resection specimen following neoadjuvant therapy.
