  1. Linear mixed-effects model was fit by maximum likelihood. Random effects in model were ‘site’ (s.d. = 5.60) and ‘block within site’ (s.d. = 1.22). The intercept is the estimated mean value of the control plots (no fence, no nutrients). This model is shown in Fig. 2a.
