While the debate on the safety of biotechnology has been running for more than quarter of a century, products and consumer awareness date to less than ten years ago.

From its earliest years, biotechnology attracted interest outside scientific circles. The scientific community has acknowledged the legitimacy of that interest: In mid-1974, at the suggestion of leading scientists, the scientific community accepted a temporary moratorium on certain experiments, and at a related international conference held in February 1975 in Asilomar, California, USA, invited press coverage. Scientists have participated vigorously in the subsequent widespread public and political debates.
