(a) For assessment of survival and (b) inflammation in the lung, Alox5−/− mice receiving a lethal dose of TsV (180 μg kg−1) were monitored for 8 h with or without exogenous LTB4 administration (50 ng per mice, intranasal). Lungs were then excised for analysis of total protein content, production of IL-1β, PGE2 release, and MPO activity. The experiment was conducted once with six mice and the error bars denote s.d. *PBS versus Vehicle+TsV; #Vehicle+TsV versus LTB4+TsV. These differences were considered significant with P<0.05, according to one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni’s post-test (for soluble mediators and MPO) or the log-rank test (for survival).
