Absence of PSMα or lgt genes abrogates the capacity of S. aureus to stimulate TNF-α, IL-6 or IL-1β (a–c) and a USA300 mutant lacking PSMs plus Lgt requires complementation with both, PSM genes and lgt to regain the capacity to stimulate the release of these cytokines in human PBMCs (d–e) or IL-8 by human PMNs (f).
