Three views of rhodopsin (PDB accession 4J4Q) are shown in the context of a lipid bilayer (light grey slab); TM helices 1 (TM1, light blue) and 5 (TM5, dark blue) are highlighted. The amino acids that are affected in the RP mutants under study are shown as space-filling CPK representations (F45 (red), V209 (green) and F220 (gold)). Ballesteros–Weinstein numbers14 corresponding to the affected residues are as follows: 1.40 (F45), 5.44 (V209) and 5.55 (F220).
