Competitive ‘all-or-nothing’ dynamics are evident in the shortness of the ‘mixed response’ regime in a, as well as the abrupt transition from one response mode to the other (d). Disabling all lateral connections results in a smooth transition between response patterns, eliminating the abrupt response switch (d, dotted lines).
