Comparison of the germination response of different concentrations of glyceronitrile (2) with (a) A. manglesii and (b) R. arida. Germination of A. manglesii incubated with different concentrations of (c) glycolonitrile (3), (d) acetone cyanohydrin (4), (e) 2,3,4-trihydroxybutyronitrile (5), (f) mandelonitrile (6), (g) KCN, (h) KCN at pH 3 (1 mM HCl/glycine buffer), (i) glyceronitrile (2) at pH 4 (1 mM acetic acid/sodium acetate), and (j) glyceronitrile (2) at pH 3 (1 mM HCl/glycine). Water (0 μM) served as the control in each experiment and values are means of three replicates±s.e. KCN, potassium cyanide.
