(b,c) The two vertex-wise measures of shape: the radial distance is defined as the distance of a vertex to the medial curve of the structure, for example, the hippocampus in b. The Jacobian determinant captures the deformation that is needed to map a subject-specific shape to a template, which is shown with an example of the accumbens in c.
