Three types of dimer with identical spheres are considered: (a,b) R1=R2=R=6 mm, (c,d) R1=R2=R=9 mm and (e,f) R1=R2=R=12 mm. Two gaps are analysed: (a,c,e) d0=2 and (b,d,f) d0=1/3. The black/red arrows represent the ‘on’ (1)/’off’ (0) states of the switching device, respectively. Simulations are performed with the dipolar model (see Supplementary Notes 1 and 2).
