pCRP (yellow) binds to the plasma membrane of activated monocytes. It is subsequently released on membrane-derived microvesicles (blue). Microvesicle-associated pCRP is converted to pCRP* (red). pCRP* can activate the complement system by binding C1q (light green) or dissociate into individual mCRP subunits.
