The scattering polarizations of a nanohole and a nanoparticle are found to follow magnetic field and electric field orientations respectively. (a) Experimentally (λ=780 nm) measured scattering polarization (ψsc) of an 80 nm diameter gold nanoparticle (open blue square) and an 80 nm diameter hole punctured on an 80 nm thick gold film (open red circle). The lines denote fits assuming electric and magnetic dipolar radiations, respectively. (b) Scattering polarization measured from the tangential electric field, ψsc, E is plotted as a function of ψ. Red and blue lines are linear curves with slope of one and zero, respectively.
