  1. Mean observed and estimated, by microbial O2 uptake, remineralization length scales, z*’s, for fast and slow-sinking particles. NA is where there was no net attenuation of POC flux with depth, as it actually increased at intermediate depths. Offshore the microbial z* is close to that observed for the fast-sinking particles but is much higher than the observed onshore.
