  1. Abbreviations: CIs, confidence intervals; OLS, ordinary linear regression; SMA, standard major axis.
  2. Parameters for the scaling of vein traits with leaf size, that is, of b in the equation log (trait)=a+b log (leaf area), across palmately and pinnately veined species in a global data set of 485 species of dicotelydons, representing 227 genera from 78 families. The expectation for b from the development model was taken from Supplementary Table S3. For all relationships, the Spearman's correlation coefficient (rs) was tested first; if not significant at P=0.05, then b=0, and the rs is presented. If rs was significant, the method for fitting the allometry was the SMA or OLS, depending on how the trait was determined (see Supplementary Methods). The b-values are provided with 95% CIs, and the a-values with R2 values in parentheses. If relationships were significant for both palmately and pinnately veined species, lines were tested for similarity in b and a (rightmost column); if b did not differ at P=0.05, the presented b-value is for the common slope. As in Supplementary Table S3, the bullet symbol (·) signifies marginally, and the threshold was set at 20% difference. Data in bold indicate that the predicted b-values were supported in the global data set, that is, when for a relationship the predicted b-value fell within the 95% CIs for the determined b-value; when a relationship with a predicted b-value of 0 had no significant correlation; or when a relationship with a predicted b-value marginally different from 0 had a low R2 and shallow slope (0±0.2). Significance: *P<0.05; **P<0.01; ***P<0.001.
