Panels ao are computer simulations to outline the method. (ac,df) Examples of two modulations that, when applied on the SLM while LASER 2 is focussed onto the corresponding locations in the sample plane (i,k), generate proportional signals on specific pixels at the CCD2 (j,l). (g,h) The imaging hologram is a superposition of a number of such modulations, and when applied on the SLM the system can achieve imaging of a number of sample points m onto series of specific CCD pixels simultaneously (n,o), in principle with no crosstalk between individual points owing to the conservation of orthogonality within the system. The resulting image o is reconstructed from these 'active' pixels. Blue circles in j, l and n show expanded areas of a CCD plane. The signal in the expansion circle of panel n is scaled by six orders of magnitude beyond the point of saturation and still the isolated 'active' pixels corresponding to the dark sample locations give no signal owing to orthogonality conservation.
