Alloparental brood care from related (blue squares) and unrelated (red squares) subordinate females provided to dominant females' clutches after the simulated egg cannibalism (Reduction) or after the control manipulation (Control), controlled for clutch size. The interaction relatedness × treatment (Reduction/Control) is significant, indicating that unrelated subordinate females increased their investment in alloparental brood care compared with related subordinates when the clutch size was reduced to simulate egg cannibalism. Depicted are means±s.e.m., sample sizes are indicated in the graph. See Table 3 for model details.
