Representative epifluorescent microscopic images of ThS staining (green) and anti-AT8 phosphorylated tau antibody (red) seen in control (a1–a3), low-dose (b1–b3) and high-dose (c1–c3) cigarette smoke-treated mice in the motor cortex. High-dose smoking induces tau hyperphosphorylation (arrows in c2) compared with control and low-dose age-matched mice, in which little or no AT8-positive staining was found. Abnormally phosphorylated tau accumulates mainly around amyloid plaques (c3). Scale bar: 25 μm.
