Neuronal density (number of neurons per mm2) was estimated by quantifying the number of neurons after NeuN staining (a-c). Neuronal density is similar in control and smoke-exposed animals (P>0.5) in cortical region (d), CA1–CA3 hippocampal areas (e) and subiculum (f) positing that cigarette smoke does not increase the rate of neuronal death.
