From: Microbiota-derived lactate accelerates colon epithelial cell turnover in starvation-refed mice

(a) Mice were starved for 36 h and refed with CE2, ED or ORS. A group of mice refed with CE2 was also given oral antibiotics. The percentage of BrdU+ cells per crypt in the colon 12 h after refeeding was compared (control=100%). Data are shown as an average+s.d. for 4–6 mice for each group. Statistically significant differences from the control group are indicated with a P-value (Mann–Whitney test). (b) Germ-free mice were starved for 36 h and refed CE2 for the indicated time. Data are shown as an average+s.d. for three mice for each group.
