(a) The chemical structures of five compounds: berberine, crystal violet, dequalinium, ethidium bromide and rhodamine 6G that were found to bind to the RamR protein from the SPR analysis (Supplementary Fig. S2). (b) Effect of drugs on ramA transcription. β-Galactosidase levels were assayed in the wild-type strain carrying the ramA reporter plasmid (pNNramA) (NES84). Cells were grown in LB supplemented with 2 mM ethidium bromide, 0.1 mM dequalinium, 1 mM rhodamine 6G and 0.2 mM crystal violet or 2 mM berberine. The values displayed correspond to the mean of three independent experiments. Bars correspond to the s.d. Student’s t-test; *,P<0.01 versus control.
