There were no significant differences between sleep-rested and sleep-deprived conditions in self-reported hunger (collected using a visual analogue scale with a 10-cm line, y axis is in mm) either at arrival on the experimental evenings, or before the fMRI scan session in the mornings. Hunger levels were significantly greater before the scan compared with study arrival (the evening before) in both groups (P<0.05; paired t-tests across 23 participants).
