(a) Simulations between 999 random pairs of host and cuckoo finch eggs show that as the proportion of parasitic eggs in the nest increases, they are more likely to be accepted. Error bars show ±1 s.e.m. (b) The probability of rejection also depends on the level of colour difference between host and parasitic eggs: closely matching eggs are less likely to be rejected when they comprise a greater proportion of the clutch.
