Vertical boxes represent the stratigraphic range of each species with colour corresponding to the results of dental microwear analyses. Dental diagrams display hypothesized diet based on dental pattern (before the present study). Empty boxes represent species, which have only been studied for outline analyses. Brown signifies an omnivorous condition, and green an herbivorous condition with a significant abrasive and fibrous component (for example, grasses). Filled ellipses correspond to pictures of dental microwear (scale bar, 100 μm). The δ180 record characterizes the trend of high-latitude temperatures48,49, whereas the green and yellow box represent the gradient from closed and humid to open and arid environments is southwestern Europe derived from hypsodonty-based estimates of paleoprecipitations31.
