The pattern is based on a modulated unit cell (highlighted) and a mesoscopic period of 1,800 nm. The mesoscopic period provides many Fourier components and the modulation controls the energy spread of these components. In this way, the rich Fourier spectra associated with quasi-crystals and random structures can be controlled in a deterministic way to suit different applications.
