With ischaemia/reperfusion, upregulated TRAF1 facilitates ASK1 phosphorylation at Thr845 through a direct interaction. Activated ASK1 synergistically phosphorylates and activates the MKK/JNK pro-death pathway and inhibits the Akt pro-survival signalling pathway, leading to enhanced neuronal death and cerebral damage.
