(a) 200 × 200 nm2 scanning electron microscopy image of the clusters formed on the lower MgO tunnel barrier (tCr=0.5 nm) before deposition of the upper barrier and annealing. The inset in the lower right corner is an illustration of the treatment performed with the ImageJ software (Methods), in which the clusters are supposed to have ellipsoidal shape. (b) Statistical distribution of the cluster size (square root of surface area) as obtained from an analysis of 460 nanoobjects. The distribution is a gaussian peaked at 5.0 nm, with a full width at half-maximum of 1.5 nm.
