(a) Abundance of Fe species in mineral and aqueous phases in the GB plume (2–10 °C) predicted by the thermodynamic modelling. The temperature of the plume samples collected in this study were 2.53–2.97 °C (indicated by the green bar). (b) Fe XANES spectra of Fe-bearing minerals in plume particles and (c) their observed distribution quantified by linear combination fitting of the spectromicroscopic data. In Fig. 4b, spot 0 to spot 3 are the iron XANES spectra collected from sample locations indicated in Supplementary Fig. 7a, and vertical lines at 7,129.5, 7,131 and 7,132 eV are to guide the eye; full spectra range is 7,071.4–7,367.6 eV.
