The fish are shown in the lateral and dorsal views, and exhibit a range of variation with respect to the length of the preorbital region of the skull (shaded grey). From relatively short to relatively long: LF, Labeotropheus fuelleborni (a); TRC, Tropheops sp. ‘red cheek’ (b); MZ, Maylandia zebra (c), respectively. Lateral images are of dissected specimens that have had their eyes removed and skin deflected to reveal salient bones and muscles of the feeding apparatus. Scale bars, 1 cm.
