The main panel shows the friction coefficient μx versus velocity v for the symmetric (μx,s, orange symbols) and the asymmetric system (μx,a, blue symbols) on sliding the two cylinders at constant distance (x direction). The solid lines are power-law fits, resulting in exponents of κ=0.57 and κ=0.88 for the symmetric and asymmetric contacts, respectively. The dashed line denotes the linear response regime, as extracted from equilibrium runs. At the lowest velocities, μx,a is over 250 × smaller than μx,s. The inset shows the work per collision Wy versus the velocity v using the same colour coding as the main graph (orange symbols, data taken from ref. 20). For these asperity collisions, we find a friction reduction of 150.
