(a) Schematic of the in situ measurement cell consisting of ~500 nm of LiCoO2, 70 nm of Al (the transducer) and 100 nm of SiO2 (thermal isolation layer) on a sapphire substrate. The LiCoO2 is immersed in a liquid electrolyte of 1:1 ethylene carbonate and dimethyl carbonate containing 1 M LiClO4. The LiCoO2 thin film was sputter deposited through a metal hard mask to define its area. (b) Cross-sectional HRTEM image of the LiCoO2 film after 500 °C annealing in air. The polycrystalline nature and random texturing can be seen from both the lattice fringes and the selected area diffraction (inset). The scale bar in b is 10 nm and the scale bar in the inset of b is 2 nm−1.
