(a) Comparison of field-measured LAI of vascular plants at seven adjacent sites in Canada; (b) comparison of MODIS NDVI at these seven sites. The sites (and ages in 2002) were CA-NS7 (4 years), CA-NS95 (7 years), CA-NS6 (13 years), CA-NS5 (21 years), CA-NS3 (38 years), CA-NS2 (72 years) and CA-NS1 (152 years). LAI of vascular plants was measured before the end of the growing season in 2004. NDVI values represent the mean NDVI values from May to September during 2002–2006, and the error bars indicate s.d. (see Methods).
