Log-transformed summer (December–January–February) depth-integrated (0–50 m) chlorophyll-a (chl-a) pooled from Palmer Stations B and E (x axis) versus R1 (the recruitment of krill age class 1+, defined as the percent contribution of krill <30 mm to the total number of krill in Adélie penguin diets during each summer; see Methods section) with a 1-year time lag following summer chl-a (n=19, Pearson’s R=0.84, adjusted r2=0.72, P<0.00005).
