Specific growth rates of N. scintillans incubated for 96 h with food (F) and without food (NF), with or without nutrients (N) and in light and dark condition to assess the relative importance of internal nutrition from symbionts and external phagotrophy for growth of N. scintillans. Addition of f/50 nutrients (N) was meant to support endosymbiotic photosynthesis. For incubations without added nutrients bars represent mean±one s.d. for three replicate incubations. For incubations with nutrients, bars represent means±one s.d. for eight replicate incubations. Statistically significant levels for P values obtained using two-sample t-test are shown in Supplementary Table 1.
