(a) A droplet with a square wetted area formed on a high-density square array of a cylindrical micropillars was converted to a rectangular droplet upon increasing the pitch along one axis. Different pitches along the x (L) and y (M) directions implied different depinning contact angles along these two directions resulting in elongated droplets. (b) The same principle when applied to a regular hexagonal array of cylindrical micropillars resulted in a stretched hexagon orthogonal to the direction along which the pitch was increased. This strategy can be utilized to design surfaces with anisotropic liquid supply rates. Scale bar, 100 μm.
