The density dip n↓(r, t)∝r4 in the centre of the vortex structure is a manifestation of the Berry phase 2π. (c) Dynamics of the total spin populations in a deep optical lattice. The population of the two spin components undergoes a single oscillation before monotonically approaching 1/2.
