Figure 6: C. neoformans senses Cu deficiency in the host brain and human CSF.

(a) C57BL/6 mice were intranasally infected with C. neoformans cells expressing CMT1p-GFP, CTR1p-GFP or CTR4p-GFP. After days 1 and 7, lung tissues were removed and analysed by two-photon microscopy with a × 10 lens (scale=50 μm), and the 2.5-D analysis was performed using the ZEN2012 software to quantify GFP signal intensities in the lung. (b) C57BL/6 mice were intracerebrally infected with C. neoformans cells expressing CMT1p-GFP, CTR1p-GFP or CTR4p-GFP. After days 1 and 7, the brain was removed and examined using a × 10 lens with a 4.0 magnification factor (scale=20 μm). (c) Human CSF was inoculated with C. neoformans cells H99 and ctr1Δctr4. CFUs were enumerated as described previously56.
