(a) Resolving 0.3-nm steps in the lateral direction of a firmly attached 3-μm polystyrene bead. Steps are induced every 1 s by moving the fluidic cell in which the particle is attached with a piezoelectric stage (see sketch). Both, the tracked bead position as well as the simultaneously recorded stage signal are shown over time. (b) Resolving 0.3-nm steps in axial direction that were induced every 1 s or every 100 ms. All data in the figure were recorded at 2,500 Hz. For the 1-s steps the data was smoothed to 100 and 10 Hz (shown as light and dark colours), for the 100 ms steps to 500 Hz (light green) and 100 Hz (dark green).
