The expression of miR-421 was analysed by qRT–PCR from wild type (WT) and different lines of miR-421-transgenic mice. (c) miR-421-transgenic mice developed normally without obvious cardiac function alterations under basal conditions. Fractional shortening (FS) was shown. (n=8 per group). (d–f) miR-421-transgenic mice exhibited increased mitochondrial fragmentation, apoptosis and myocardial infarction sizes in response to I/R. WT C57BL/6 mice and miR-421-transgenic mice (8 weeks old) were subjected to I/R. Mitochondrial fragmentation (d), apoptosis (e) and myocardial infarction sizes (f) were analysed. Data are shown as mean±s.e.m. of eight independent experiments. Analysis was performed with one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey–Kramer post hoc analysis. *P<0.05 versus WT+I/R.
