In both figures, a density plot of the gap function is superimposed to a representative Fermi surface consisting of a hole pocket (h) at the centre and an electron pocket (e) at the borders of the Brillouin zone. In the nodal s+− states (a) the nodes are not enforced by symmetry (here they are located at the electron pockets). In the d-wave state (b) the nodes are enforced by symmetry to be on the diagonals of the Brillouin zone, and therefore can only cross the hole pockets.
