Loss and Recovery of Phenotypic Expression of Gross Leukaemia Virus

Abstract

A RECENT theory of the viral induction of cancer1–3 postulates that determinants of oncogenic viruses can be carried permanently by cells of many vertebrates, either overtly or covertly. Several organismic and environmental factors can then “switch on” and “switch off” the expression of viruses. Thus the C-type RNA tumour viruses appear to be perhaps completely or incompletely expressed and are directly associated with leukaemias and sarcomas of fowls, rodents and felines. This article describes a system in which the expression of Gross leukaemia virus (GLV) in rat leukaemic cells was successively lost and recovered by alternate passages in vivo and in vitro.
