Abstract
PROSTAGLANDINS1 are synthesized in the gut2 but their role, if any, on regulation of intestinal function is unknown. Oral administration of prostaglandins shortens intestinal transit time3 and several prostaglandin-producing tumours are associated with diarrhoea4. Infusion of prostaglandins and theophylline into the superior mesenteric artery of dogs results in the loss of gut fluid from jejunal loops5.
