Genetic Origin of RD114 and Other RNA Tumour Viruses assayed by Molecular Hybridization

Abstract

MOLECULAR hybridization experiments between tumour virus nucleic acids and DNA from uninfected cells can be used to determine whether the cell has the potential to code for the viral genetic information1–11. A positive result would help to decide between various theories on the mechanism of RNA tumour virus origin and replication and could provide a system for determining, unambiguously, the phylogenetic origin of an uncharacterized virus.
