Light Induced Changes of Ionic Flux in the Retinal Rod

Abstract

STUDIES using X-ray diffraction on the highly organized outer segments of the retinal rods have up to now been static structural ones, functional studies requiring too long a time. Electron density profiles of rod disks have been derived from diffraction data on strips of isolated retinas1-3. Diffraction in intact retina4 and small changes of the disk membrane structure after total bleaching have also been observed5.
