Abstract
THERE is ample evidence to suggest that visual receptor rhodopsin consists of 11-cis-retinal linked through a Schiff base to the protein opsin1–4. When exposed to light, rhodopsin is converted to opsin and all-trans-retinal. The replenishment of rhodopsin in vivo requires an isomerisation system which converts all-trans-retinal to 11-cis retinal (see equation (3), scheme 1); the reaction of the latter with opsin to form rhodopsin is known to occur at a facile rate5.
